The Landing
Within seconds, the fairies began landing on the other side of the rainbow. Each floated from the sky as if supported by a parachute. Snake hung in the sky like a twisted tube of toothpaste, his head perfectly flattened by the experience.
At first, the fairies looked stunned as they gently drifted to the ground. Their legs felt weak and their little bodies shook all over until they acclimated to the new environment.
Vinnie immediately reached into his pocket to free Spider. He searched deeper and deeper without success.
“Where’s Spider?” asked Vinnie as he looked around.
Everyone was too preoccupied with acclimating to their new environment to pay attention to what Vinnie was saying. Vinnie began to panic as he thought about what might have happened to a defenseless little spider without wings to support his flight.
Vinnie began to fly around aimlessly, a normal reaction for him during stress. He flew up and down, unable to decide what to do. Visions of Spider suspended in the rainbow, unable to weave his way out, raced through Vinnie’s anxious mind. While Vinnie obsessed, a small object passed before his eyes on the way to the garden ground. A muffled, familiar voice echoed in the air before it hit the ground. “Help! I hit the delete button!”
“Delete button?” Vinnie’s brow wrinkled as he thought out loud. “That must be Spider!” Vinnie sped toward the area of the garden, where he thought Spider had landed abruptly. He flew around searching and calling his name to no avail. Vinnie knew Spider was nearby. Frustration mounted as he fluttered in and out of a clump of fragrant herbs and sprawling rose bushes looking for Spider.
Suddenly, Vinnie’s sharp eyes spotted Spider’s laptop stuck in the heavily mulched garden. He dove for the ground as fast as his wings could flutter, determined to save a friend in need. Then, he felt a sharp jerk from behind, tugging at the back of his neck. No matter how fast he fluttered, Vinnie stayed right where he was, suspended in mid air, caught on a very long thorn belonging to a nearby rose bush.
To make matters even worse, a large black dog ran to where Spider lay, silently waiting to be rescued, and began to bark. Vinnie tried in vain to quiet the dog before its owner was alerted to the situation, but it was too late. First he heard footsteps, then he saw a pair of tan legs walk in front of him as he wiggled helplessly in the air.
“What are you barking at?” the gardener reprimanded the black dog, as she carefully prodded the garden floor with a spade. “It’s not going to hurt you!” The gardener patted the dog as she reached over to pick up the box.
Just then, Vinnie’s tireless efforts set him free as the thorn sprung him into the air. He flew right in front of the gardener’s eyes, dazzling her with every acrobatic trick he could perform.
The gardener stepped back, shaking what appeared to be the stars out of her eyes.
